Dr. B.P. Hivale an eminent Professor of Philosophy at Wilson College, a Ph.D from Harvard, founded the Ahmednagar College in 1947. It was a pioneering effort to open learning opportunities for the poor students of Ahmednagar. The founder Principal Dr. Hivale and subsequent Principal Dr. T. Barnabas were great dreamers and laid strong foundation for education.
Bhaskar Pandurang Hiwale Education (BPHE) Society
Bhaskar Pandurang Hiwale Education (BPHE) Society is registered under Societies Registration Act and Public Trusts Act in the year 1969. The object of the Society is to promote education, knowledge and culture among people irrespective of race, class, caste, creed or sex.
BPHE Society is the pioneer in several programmes and initiatives in the field of education, research and extension. Some of the prominent initiatives are rural service, the National Service Scheme, Drug Chemistry and Environment Management. Ahmednagar College, established in 1947, is the first rural college in the country.
BPHE Society stands for excellence and believes not in things but men. According to Dr. T. Barnabas, the former Principal of Ahmednagar College, the vision of yesteryears may be kept as beacon for the generations to come.
BPHE Society believes in shaping the human beings in such a way that they shoulder the responsibilities in changing world. It believes in training the people to become the institutions themselves.
In the words of Rev. Joseph Barnabas, former Secretary, BPHE Society, ‘If there is no vision for tomorrow, money alone can not bring concrete results. For tomorrow, there has to be a master plan with human face. Finances can be made available to implement these plans’.
Ahmednagar College was founded on 20th June 1947 by Dr. BP Hivale with the support and cooperation of the American Marathi Mission, the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Mission, Boston, Minnepolis, Minnesota and a number of individuals and groups. In the 6 decades of its existence the strength of students has grown from 300 to 8000. The BPHE Society was established in 1969.Today the Society runs three prominent educational institutions namely, Ahmednagar College, Centre for Studies in Rural Development – Institute of Social Work and Research, and
Institute of Management Studies and Career Development Research in the state of Maharashtra. The BPHE Society is extending its services to the people with innovative educational programmes under the leadership of Mr. Philip Barnabas, the present Secretary.
CSRD-ISWR focuses on teaching, research and extension activities in Rural Development. In the year 2010-11 the institute is celebrating the golden jubilee. During these 50 years the institute has passed through various stages.
The institute has contributed remarkably in the field of social work education, community work and rural development. IGNOU study centre has been launched at CSRD since 2011.
