International Conference on
Competencies, Compassion and Commitment for Achieving Sustainable Development Goals

14-16 February 2020

The Background

The proposed conference is in continuation to the institute’s initiative of organizing series of international conferences on the broad theme of spirituality and social work. The Institute has already organized five conferences in the past and this is going to be the sixth conference. The conference intends to consolidate the present efforts by policy makers, academicians and practitioners in implementation of sustainable development goals (SDGs).

Competencies, Compassion and commitment constitute the foundations of social work profession. They are interrelated themes of the profession. Competence is the knowledge and skill part of the profession. It is the intellectual dimension of the profession. It is acquiring the necessary information, knowledge, concepts and research based learning concerning the profession. Having sound knowledge about the profession, does not make a good social worker. He or she should be compassionate as well as committed enough to deliver quality services to the society.

Compassion refers to the beliefs and values. It is the spiritual and the ethical aspects of the profession. It is essentially nurturing a sympathetic and empathetic attitude towards the needy and the poor. Compassionate approach to life nurtures love, upholds justice, equality, peace, harmony and fraternity, endures suffering and enjoys doing good things, even if they are seldom noticed, recognized, acknowledged or rewarded. Compassion is a universal concern for all the living beings on earth. It is basically expressing love for life.

Commitment is the feeling component where ‘heart’ speaks. Here the feelings and sentimentality predominate. It is the emotional part of social work. Commitment is the dedication, motivation, sincerity, honesty and the hard work put into the achievement of a pre set goal or for the realisation of a vision and mission in life. Without commitment, nothing can be achieved in life. It the endless hope for success in any pursuit. It is expressed in invincible spirit and tireless effort.

Sustainable development goals are global concerns and social work profession committed to the achievement of all the sustainable development goals at national as well as global levels. Competencies, compassion and commitment constitute the comprehensive strategy of social work profession to promote sustainable development goals. The conference will provide a platform for research scholars, academicians and practitioners from social sciences and other disciplines to share their ideas and thoughts on the theme. It is expected to bring serious thinkers from India and from around the world. The conference will contribute towards the knowledge, attitude and skill building for social service professionals that are relevant for the achievement of sustainable development goals.
